About The Position

Member of the care delivery team will function under the direction of clinical leadership to provide delegated direct patient care interventions to include data collection pertinent to the admission of an ambulatory patient, coordination of patient tests and services, and completing point of care testing and/or phlebotomy as indicated. Responsible to provide a safe environment for his/her assigned patients; to complete the assigned work; to monitor the patient for changes in condition and to report those changes to the RN/LPN, or provider; to document the work that he/she completes; and to document and report any pertinent observations as a result of the interventions. This position is an important member of the patient care team who uses acquired, office-based skills to assist providers and nursing personnel in maintaining efficient workflow to ensure safe, quality care with a patient centered approach focusing on continuity of patient care and satisfaction. Making independent clinical decisions is outside of the scope for this position. Refer clinical questions to the provider or nurse. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed first semester in an accredited nursing program. Required
  • Successfully completed a medical assistant or patient care technician program. Required
  • A Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician may be substituted for the educational requirement. Required
  • Active certification to practice in Kansas as either Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician is required as a substitute for education qualifications. Required
  • Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days. Required
  • Ability to exchange information clearly and concisely, and present ideas, facts and technical information. (Required proficiency)
  • Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, write routine correspondence and effectively present information to physicians, patients, and peers. (Required proficiency)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an office or clinic setting. Preferred
  • Knowledgeable of and follows correct techniques in the ordering, collection, and labeling of laboratory specimens; in assisting providers in clean or sterile procedures. (Preferred proficiency)

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADL's), accurate measurement and recording of weight, height, vital signs and report any changes.
  • Knowledgeable of and follows correct techniques in the ordering, collection, and labeling of laboratory specimens.
  • Promote infection prevention through use of standard precautions, & proper procedure in clean/sterile procedures, hand hygiene and cleanliness of patient rooms/department.
  • Implements identified plan through coordination of care with interdisciplinary care team to employ strategies to promote health and wellness.
  • Communicate pertinent data and information relative to the patient, situation, or setting in a timely manner.
  • Collaborative with interdisciplinary care team encompassing strategies to achieve expected outcomes, and demonstrates advocacy in all roles and settings.
  • Maintains exam rooms with necessary supplies and materials.
  • Prepares a list of supplies needed.
  • Restocks supplies when needed.
  • Makes assessments and corrections of patient rooms and surrounding area for safety.
  • Practices Diversity, Equity and Inclusion principles in their daily work by respecting others' uniqueness, perspectives, backgrounds or beliefs.
  • Commits to lifelong learning through critical thinking, self-reflection, and inquiry for personal growth and development.
  • Participates in intra- and interdepartmental committee activities, and attends huddles, staff meetings, or mandatory retreats in compliance with departmental requirements.

  • Mentors Medical Assistants new to their role for the purpose of ensuring successful enculturation, orientation, competence, and emotional support.
  • Supports students to enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Communicates effectively in all areas of professional practice.
  • Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health
  • Performs other duties as assigned
