This Medical Assistant position in the Podiatry Department provides essential medical and nursing support to provider staff in an ambulatory setting. Responsibilities include specimen procurement (phlebotomy) and specialized procedures, adhering to BMC policies and American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) standards, all to ensure safe and efficient patient care delivery.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program.
  • Ability to pass clinical competency testing.
  • Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language.
  • Ability to perform basic math and quantitative measurements, e.g., obtain height and weight, abdominal girths, measure urine output, calorie counts, etc.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information/data.
  • Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads (e.g., independently transport average-sized patient via wheelchair and stretcher, etc.) throughout assigned shift.
  • Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues, and changing organizational climate and personnel issues.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical/nursing support functions to provider staff in ambulatory setting.
  • Perform specimen procurement (phlebotomy) and related specialized procedures according to BMC policy and procedures based on standards set by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
  • Perform duties to assist the clinical staff in safe, efficient delivery of patient care.
  • Obtain and document required patient information, including but not limited to: age, weight, address, next of kin, etc.
  • Timely notify clinical staff of any changes or unusual findings relative to patient information and/or unit functioning.
  • Assist clinical staff during procedures and exams, including but not limited to: performing room set-ups, assisting patients with preparation steps (e.g., dressing/undressing, etc.), handing of instruments/supplies, acting as a chaperon, holding or restraining patient, etc.
  • Instruct patients/families as directed by clinical staff, including but not limited to: explaining procedures, reinforcing discharge/procedure/instructions, etc.
  • Obtain EKG when ordered.
  • Perform phlebotomy/obtain specimens as ordered, and prepare blood samples/specimens for ordered tests completing required order forms/labels, and arranging for and/or delivering specimens to appropriate labs/drop off points.
  • Review charts for accuracy and completeness, including but not limited to obtaining and documents/files, lab/test results, interviews patient, completes pre-procedure/or checklist, retrieves/calls for old records, etc.
  • Schedule appointments and/or procedures/surgeries to ensure efficient patient care.
  • Transport/escort patients/families as needed to ensure efficient patient care.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served; notify clinical staff when patients in age groups not regularly served are present.
  • Obtain and document pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight and height.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and support duties to promote/ensure efficient area operations.
  • Answer the telephone and patient/visitor inquiries, identifying unit, self and role; respond to caller/patient/visitor needs within the scope of role, or take and deliver messages in a timely manner; seek assistance from the clinical staff when appropriate.
  • Prepare records for clinic session including re-filing at close of session.
  • Obtain and enter charge information.
  • Order, stock and organize area equipment, supplies and materials in accordance with budget/par levels.
  • Perform related general office duties including but not limited to, taking inventory, picking up and delivering correspondence, photocopying, etc.
  • Check and clean area equipment including but not limited to, performing safety and quality testing, etc.
  • Perform exam/procedure room turnover between patient visits/procedures including but not limited to: cleaning, restocking, etc.
  • Identify emergency/urgent situations and initiate appropriate response actions within the scope of her/his role, including but not limited to, immediately notifying clinical staff of medical emergencies, initiating “CODE” procedures, etc.
  • Act in a manner that protects confidentiality of patient, employee, and hospital information at all times.
  • Act in a manner that supports a positive and collaborative work environment and that is congruent with established standards, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with all staff members and take appropriate steps to effectively resolve interpersonal conflicts seeking assistance from her/his supervisor when needed.
  • Seek out and act upon constructive feedback regarding daily performance and work toward achieving goals identified during performance evaluations.
  • Participate in staff meetings/initiates including appropriate quality improvement and education activities, or if unable to attend non-mandatory activities, accept responsibility to review meeting minutes and become knowledgeable of issues discussed.
  • Comply with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and regulations, e.g., DPH, Joint Commission, fire codes, OSHA, etc.
  • Consistently adhere to attendance, safety, and infectious disease control policies/standards, consistently available on the unit.
  • Remain knowledgeable and follow appropriate policies, procedures and work rules, including but not limited to, policy regarding hours of work, absenteeism and tardiness.
  • Participate in ongoing educational activities to maintain technical competency and update requisite skills in his/her area of responsibilities; maintain required competencies.
  • Attend in-services on new equipment, procedures and programs; maintain accurate annual education record.
  • Complete annual mandatory educational requirements, e.g., safety regulation and infection control standard review, departmental and unit specific competencies, etc.
  • Maintain a presentable appearance in accordance with dress code requirements, including wearing visible hospital I.D. badge that identifies self as a Medical Assistant.
  • Assist in orientation of new staff; serve as a resource to float staff.
  • Adapt to changing patient and unit needs, including but not limited to, offers assistance to other team members, floating, adjusting assignments, etc.
  • Collaborate with charge nurse/nurse manager/supervisor to coordinate break periods with unit activities.
  • Deliver care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for patient diversity.
  • Organize care to function efficiently, effectively uses hospital resources, i.e., equipment, supplies, personnel, etc., and completes assignments within an appropriate time frame.
  • Utilize hospital’s attributes of RESPECT as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
  • Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
