Requirements

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Laboratory Services
  • Venipuncture and Specimen Processing:
  • Perform venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • Process specimens, including blood, urine, and stool, following practice policies.
  • Quality Control and Maintenance:
  • Conduct quality control testing.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments
  • Vital Signs and Triage:
  • Measure and record vital signs.
  • Assist with patient triage.
  • Additional Tasks:
  • Undertake other clinic-related duties as required.
  • Clinic Admissions:
  • Vital Signs:
  • Measure and record full vital signs, including weight, height, pulse, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure.
  • Documentation and Assistance:
  • Complete MA rooming notes at every visit.
  • Assist the physician with clinic visit exams as needed, including pap smears, chaperoning breast and rectal exams, and bone marrow biopsies.
  • Patient Transport and Communication:
  • Transport patients using a wheelchair when necessary.
  • Return calls for routine follow-up and testing appointments.
  • Process radiology orders, referrals, and medication orders.
  • Maintain professional communication with all staff through email and Teams.
  • Indirect Care Activities:
  • Patient Care Supply Management:
  • Manage and ensure availability of patient care supplies.
  • Scheduling:
  • Schedule patient appointments and coordinate tests and procedures as ordered by the physician.
  • Chart Management:
  • Prepare charts for physician clinics.
  • Verify that all results are included in the chart before the visit.
  • Obtain any missing reports prior to the physician’s exam.

  • Admitting patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, and processing laboratory samples as per practice policies.
  • Monitoring deviations from normal ranges, report them, and repeat measurements if needed.
  • Updating patient charts with vital signs, lab results, medication lists, and new prescriptions.
  • Preparing patients for exams, providing necessary equipment and supplies, and supporting patient positioning and transfer.
  • Ensuring CBC results and other essential information are accurately documented in both paper and electronic records.
  • Ensuring that patients are scheduled for follow-up appointments as directed by the physician.
  • Guiding patients receiving therapy to the treatment area or scheduled for therapy as directed by the nurse.
  • Completing and submitting precertification and authorization requests to the insurance staff.
  • Scheduling any required tests for future appointments and provide necessary preparation instructions.
  • Providing a wheelchair and assists with their departure, coordinating with family or accompanying them as needed.
  • Obtaining written orders for laboratory testing from the nurse or physician for each patient.
  • Determining which tests are performed on-site and which are sent to reference laboratories.
  • Collecting samples through finger sticks or venipuncture according to practice policies and ensures samples are properly labeled and stored.
  • Communicating any changes in reference lab requirements to the nursing staff and assist in ensuring accurate sample collection by all staff members.
  • Identifying the appropriate reference lab for each patient, with assistance from insurance if needed.
  • Completing requisition forms either on paper or using the lab's online system and select the correct specimen containers as per the lab’s requirements.
  • Providing verbal and written instructions to patients for self-collection when necessary, collects specimens following practice and CLIA guidelines, and processes and stores samples until they are picked up by the reference lab.
  • Performing on-site testing, including CBCs for hematology according to practice policies, as outlined in the Lab Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Conducting urine dipstick tests, pregnancy tests, finger stick tests for PT/INR, and Hemoccult stool tests, following the manufacturer's instructions and documenting the results in the patient chart.
  • Retrieving reference lab reports daily and as needed, forwarding the original copies to the nursing staff and keeping duplicate copies in the lab for one month.
  • Reporting on-site test results in writing according to practice policy and added to the patient chart for review by the nurse or physician.
  • Communicating any alert or panic values are communicated verbally to the nurse or physician immediately.
  • Managing laboratory supplies, including collection containers, requisition forms, and testing materials.
  • Performing routine maintenance on hematology instruments as outlined in the instrument's manual and address any deviations needing technical assistance.
  • Ensuring all quality assurance (QA) and proficiency testing (PT) standards are met according to practice policies, as detailed in the Laboratory Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Maintaining effective communication with reference laboratory field staff to support optimal collaboration between the office and the lab.
  • Managing biohazardous waste in accordance with practice standards, ensuring laboratory and exam room waste is removed and sealed weekly or as needed.
  • Conducting monthly inventory checks, discarding expired items and reordering supplies as necessary.
  • Handling phone calls by answering, screening, transferring them to the appropriate staff, or taking messages.
  • Checking Voicemails daily, and calls are returned by the end of the day.
