About The Position

The Medical Assistant assists physicians with medical procedures in the office. This role is responsible for phlebotomy, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance. Key duties include performing proper quality control procedures, conducting laboratory blood work, and performing blood draws while adhering to laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing. The Medical Assistant must perform technical laboratory procedures accurately and precisely, meeting the standards of all accrediting and regulating agencies. Additional responsibilities involve preparing blood or bone marrow slides, sending outside labs as dictated by patient's insurance, and maintaining various logs and records according to regulatory agencies. The position requires following AON patient ID policy, obtaining vital signs and patient screenings, preparing patients for physician exams, and documenting lab reports. The Medical Assistant will assist physicians with procedures such as bone marrows, fine needle aspirates, paracentesis, and pelvic exams, and schedule outside testing, referrals, and hospital admissions. Thorough documentation in medical records, preparing encounter forms, and showing critical blood counts to physicians are essential. The role also covers maintaining supply inventory, troubleshooting instrument malfunctions, performing EKG testing, and ensuring laboratory compliance with state and federal regulations, including taking required CEUs. Adherence to safety guidelines, cleanliness, and all federal and state laws pertaining to patient care, rights, safety, billing, and confidentiality is mandatory. The Medical Assistant will also assist in training new employees and may be required to work at any AON location and work overtime when necessary.

Requirements

  • High School or GED.
  • Certifications/Licenses as required by state where employed.
  • BLS required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and vehicle for travel to other clinic locations as needed.
  • One-year experience as a medical assistant in clinic or physician’s office with ability to perform venipuncture.
  • Critical thinking skills including solid problem solving, analysis, decision-making, planning, time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be detailed oriented with the ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Developed interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation skills, and diversity awareness.
  • Ability to work effectively with sensitive and confidential material and sometimes emotionally charged matters.
  • Good command of the English language.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians with medical procedures in office.
  • Responsible for phlebotomy, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance.

  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
  • Perform technical laboratory procedures in a timely manner with accuracy and precision, meeting the standards of all accrediting and regulating agencies.
  • Prepare blood or bone marrow slides for evaluation.
  • Send outside labs to appropriate facility as dictated by patient’s insurance plan.
  • Maintain test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists according to all regulatory agencies.
  • Will follow the AON patient I.D. policy and procedure with every patient encounter.
  • Obtain vital signs, height, weight, pain level and PHQ9 depression screening of patient as requested by physician and document in the Onco/EMR system.
  • Place patient in exam room and prepare for physician in a timely manner.
  • Receive lab reports via the telephone, lab system, or fax and document in the patient’s chart or Onco/EMR for physician’s review.
  • Assist physicians with medical procedures: bone marrows, fine needle aspirate, paracentesis, and pelvic exams.
  • Schedule outside testing, referrals to other physicians and hospital admissions as ordered by physicians, if applicable.
  • Thorough documentation in medical record chart of testing/treatment rendered to patients.
  • Prepares encounter form to charge patient for services received in office or initials all steps in process in EMR for electronic superbill.
  • Documents all QC and QA corrective action.
  • Show physician critical blood counts according to guidelines.
  • Obtain all pertinent scan and CDs and prepare for physician’s review.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies.
  • Place orders with purchasing as needed.
  • Initiate troubleshooting procedures when instrument malfunction occurs and contact central lab or instrument service company, if necessary.
  • Perform EKG testing where applicable.
  • Perform any and all duties required to keep laboratory in compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Must be able to perform compliance testing.
  • Must take the required number of CEUs annually to meet C.O.L.A. requirements.
  • Observe established safety guidelines and maintains cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment.
  • Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patients’ rights, safety, billing, and collections.
  • Adhere to all AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient information at all times.
  • Assist in training new employees to related job duties.
  • Will be expected to work at any AON location to help meet AON business needs.
  • Will be expected to work overtime when given sufficient notice of required overtime.
