About The Position

The Medical Assistant performs a variety of duties under the direction of a healthcare provider, focusing on patient care, administrative tasks, and maintaining clinic operations. Key responsibilities include screening patients, recording vital signs, assisting with examinations, scheduling appointments, handling laboratory specimens, and managing medical records. The role requires maintaining communication with health agencies for reporting and ensuring the proper functioning and stocking of examination rooms.

Requirements

  • Minimum formal education of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year job-related experience
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff
  • Securing and ensuring Confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Able to communicate effectively and maintain patient records, files, report and other correspondence
  • Ability to read, write and speak English

Responsibilities

  • Screen all patients for medical histories
  • Record vital signs
  • Perform EKG
  • Record X-Ray and/or Sonogram in patient medical record charts
  • Prepare patient for examination
  • Assist the provider as necessary during the examination
  • Schedule patients for follow up as necessary
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform phlebotomy
  • Ensure the appropriate disposal of contaminated supplies
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization
  • Stock examination rooms
  • Order supplies as necessary
  • Maintain communication with various health agencies (immunization reporting, communicable diseases etc.) to ensure patient information is updated
  • Move equipment when or where necessary
  • Assist in the examination and treatment of patient
  • Operate equipment and perform EKG as indicated
  • Prepare patient medical record (chart) and/or EMR with appropriate intake sheets
  • Gather information, complaints, take vital signs, perform various tests as ordered
  • Log Laboratory and Radiology results in patient medical record and/or EMR
  • Perform directives as requested by the various physicians
  • Complete various forms for Medical, Physical, Disability, and Schools
  • Track inventory for supplies, vaccines etc.
  • Interview patient
  • Ensure chart is available, with relevant lab work and test reports if indicated, for the provider when the provider sees the patient
  • Assist with maintaining the patient flow to and from exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Assist in escorting patients and specimens throughout the facility
  • Set up examination rooms for various primary and specialty care physicians
  • Distribute appropriate educational material to patient as directed
  • Assist in the authorization of prescription refills as directed by the physician
  • Recall or Reschedule patients as instructed
  • Intake of patient medical history prior to provider examination
  • Complete time out form
  • Perform point of care testing including nasal and throat swab
  • Perform CIR updating
  • Perform STD reporting
  • Track temperature in refrigerator/freezer; complete appropriate forms
  • Perform other duties as required
