About The Position

The Medical Assistant position at Tennessee Oncology involves providing direct, safe, and quality care to patients throughout their treatment process. This role supports oncologists and patients by performing essential clinical tasks under the supervision of medical providers, ensuring efficient workflow and patient care in a community-based cancer care setting.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of Medical Assistant Training Program or 6 months recent Medical Assistant experience in a healthcare setting required.
  • Medical Assistant Certification preferred (CMA, CCMA, NCMA, NRCMA).
  • Current TO approved BLS provider card required within 3 months of hire.

  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements for safe handling of blood and body fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Measure patient height, weight, and vital signs.
  • Screen for and document pain, distress, and clinical depression scores for each patient visit.
  • Complete the 'rooming' process, including escorting patients to exam rooms.
  • Review and verify medication lists and preferred pharmacy information with patients, updating the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as needed.
  • Review and verify patient allergies and health histories, updating the EMR at each encounter.
  • Complete required screening questionnaires and enter data in the EMR.
  • Prepare patients for examination or treatment, ensuring rooms are ready for efficient provider workflow.
  • Manage prescription refill requests according to Tennessee Oncology policies.
  • Call in prescriptions and refills as directed by the provider or under supervision.
  • Assist with telephone triage and return calls as directed by the provider.
  • Assist with provider-performed procedures and exams, acting as a chaperone when necessary.
  • Assist in the treatment room with various tasks, including port access and injections.
  • Prepare and administer medications as ordered by providers, following practice standards.
  • Collect laboratory specimens after competency validation.
  • Assist with patient education as outlined by the provider.
  • Collaborate with front office staff to schedule appointments and arrange referrals as directed.
  • Assist with completing forms for patients according to policies and within scope of practice.
  • Assist with insurance prior authorizations for visits, referrals, and medications.
  • Stock exam and treatment rooms to meet daily needs.
  • Prepare and maintain supplies and equipment for the clinic.
  • Inform the direct supervisor of clinic needs and concerns.
  • Participate on committees as requested and attend mandatory in-services and meetings.
  • Complete all required training and competency validations on time.
  • Adhere to Tennessee Oncology policies and procedures.
