About the position

The Medical Assistant at WellSpan Medical Group provides safe, therapeutic, and efficient care and services to patients in an urgent care setting. This role involves assisting in patient care, performing treatments, administering medications under supervision, and instructing patients and their families in appropriate care as directed by their provider. The position requires working full-time with a schedule of 3 12-hour shifts weekly, and practice hours are from 7:45 am to 8:15 pm, including rotation every 3rd weekend and floating holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and documents reason for visit, patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, weight, respirations, pulse, and BMI.
  • Assists providers with examinations, procedures, and other processes related to direct patient care.
  • Collects specimens as directed by provider, using appropriate equipment and protocols.
  • Ensures all patient care areas are adequately stocked with unexpired supplies and medications.
  • Prepares patients for scheduled procedures, ensuring proper gowning and setup of instruments and supplies.
  • Arranges for patients' ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services by completing necessary paperwork and scheduling appointments.
  • Maintains patient records to ensure an accurate record of the patient's medical treatment.
  • Under supervision, prepares and administers vaccines, medications, and controlled substances as prescribed.
  • Documents and processes prescription requests and refills per provider order.
  • Performs basic office procedures, examinations, and/or tests ordered by provider.
  • Provides health care information materials and reviews with patient and family members as directed.
  • Tracks, reviews, and monitors follow-up of diagnostic test results and relays information to patients.
  • Obtains basic health information from patients/family members to assist providers in determining urgency for care.
  • Gives basic care information to patients/family members per provider guidelines.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Medical Assisting or Practical Nurse required.
  • Diploma Program in Medical Assisting required.
  • Less than 1 year of externship in a physician office setting required.
  • Basic Life Support certification upon hire required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant certification upon hire required.
  • Certificate of completion from an accredited Medical Assistant program or relevant certification upon hire required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated and dependable.
  • Typing speed of 30 wpm with less than 4% error rate.
