About the position

The Medical Assistant/Sr. Medical Assistant at UPMC St. Margaret's General Surgery Clinic plays a crucial role in supporting patient care by managing patient flow, assisting with medical procedures, and ensuring compliance with health regulations. This position involves both clinical and administrative responsibilities, including patient interaction, documentation, and maintaining a clean and organized environment for patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room.
  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Collect patient information/history; taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKG's, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and document patient information into the medical record.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed and schedule appointments.
  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Administer injectable medication and vaccines under the direction and supervision of a physician.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
  • CPR certification based on AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal required.
  • Act 33 with renewal required.
  • Act 34 with renewal required.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal required.
