About The Position

UPMC Children’s Specialty Services is seeking a Medical Assistant to join its dedicated and collaborative pediatric care team. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a multi-specialty pediatric clinic, supporting high-quality care for children and their families. While the primary assignment will be with the Gastroenterology team, the Medical Assistant will also receive cross-training across multiple pediatric specialties, creating opportunities to expand clinical knowledge and build a well-rounded skill set. With 10 pediatric specialties in one location, this role offers continuous learning and professional growth. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) OR at least 1 year of patient care experience required
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category specific tasks
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Responsibilities

  • Support physicians and clinical staff with direct patient care
  • Prepare patients for exams and procedures
  • Perform clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks to support clinic operations
  • Help ensure a safe, efficient, and positive experience for patients and families
  • Contribute to UPMC’s standards for quality, safety, and patient satisfaction
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room
  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Collect patient information/history, taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines
  • Relay instructions to patients/families
  • Comply with Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately
  • Schedule appointments
  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics
  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control
  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms
  • Check schedules and organizing patient flow
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed
  • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure
  • Assist physicians with procedures
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health)
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data
  • Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures
  • Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate
  • Perform other front office responsibilities, as required
  • Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors
  • Perform other duties as assigned
