ROLE OVERVIEW and PURPOSE: The Medical Assistant- Podiatry will support podiatry providers, advanced providers, and registered nurses to deliver excellent patient-centered foot and ankle care within a dynamic team environment. This role will communicate with patients and perform clinical services to ensure high-quality patient care in a fast-paced podiatry setting. Please note, this opportunity will follow the podiatry provider to the following sites: Eastside A, Riverside FQHC, Arlanza.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Valid Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited program required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required upon hire and must be maintained as a condition of employment. These courses must follow AHA guidelines, but may be completed through approved online providers such as ProMed or other equivalent programs that meet recognized BLS standards.

Nice To Haves

  • One year medical assistant experience preferred
  • Familiarity with medical procedures and terminology
  • Proficiency with electronic health records system experience preferred
  • Intermediate computer and data entry skills
  • Must use sound judgment to anticipate needs of patients and providers

  • Bilingual English/Spanish, English/Farsi, or English/Arabic preferred - must be able to pass Language Proficiency Test if bilingual skills are needed

Responsibilities

  • Communicates with patients and performs podiatric clinical care services
  • Takes patient vital signs and obtains patient intake information, including foot/ankle pain, wound status, mobility, and medical history
  • Prepares patients for podiatry examinations, procedures, and minor surgical interventions
  • Assists with podiatric procedures such as nail avulsions, callus and wound care, ulcer treatments, and injections as directed
  • Performs clinical procedures such as blood draws, vaccines, nebulizer treatments, ear lavages, and EKGs as applicable
  • Applies and removes podiatric dressings, compression wraps, and protective padding as directed
  • Provides patient education on foot care, wound care, diabetic foot management, post-procedure care, and use of orthotics
  • Ensures exam and procedure rooms are stocked, cleaned, and properly set up for podiatry examinations and treatments
  • Monitors patient comfort and safety before, during, and after podiatric procedures
  • Coordinates podiatry provider workflows to ensure efficient patient care
  • Escorts patients to and from exam and treatment rooms and assists with positioning as needed
  • Ensures providers have all pertinent information required for each patient visit, including diagnostic images, labs, prior visit notes, and required screenings
  • Prepares and maintains podiatry equipment and instruments for daily use (e.g., sterilization, procedure trays)
  • Assists the podiatry provider with documentation, patient flow, and clinic efficiency
  • Collaborate with other providers and care teams in general medicine, wound care, diabetes management, and specialty departments as needed
  • Utilizes electronic health records to order, process, and document podiatry treatment plans for patients as directed by the provider
  • Documents podiatry procedures, wound assessments, treatments performed, and patient progress as directed
  • Conveys information to patients via telephone or email under the direction of a provider or Registered Nurse
  • Schedules for podiatry follow-up visits, wound care appointments, imaging, and referrals as directed
  • Provides patients with requested documents after reviewing to ensure forms are complete, accurate, and executed by the provider
  • Completes ongoing/annual training for position compliance
  • Maintains accurate logs for supplies, instruments, infection control, and sterilization standards
