The Medical Assistant role is to support both pharmacists and members in managing their health and navigating the healthcare systems. This position involves completing initial assessments to enroll members into diabetes disease management programs, conducting follow-up calls to ensure member adherence to goals, and completing routine medication reconciliations. The Medical Assistant will also request blood glucose levels routinely for pharmacists to monitor and adjust therapies, contact and schedule members in the Chronic Disease Management Clinic, and assist members in navigating the complex healthcare system. Responsibilities include ensuring members have necessary appointments, medical supplies, and referrals to appropriate services, as well as performing clerical and administrative duties as part of the care team. The role requires participation in the efficient use of resources and maintaining clear communication with management, co-workers, and physicians.

  • Support pharmacists and members in managing health and navigating healthcare systems.

  • Confirm members have medical supplies needed for disease management.
  • Contact health plan for benefit checks on medications and covered services.
  • Refer members to appropriate services such as Social Work, Health Education, and Behavioral Health.
  • Assist with connecting to appropriate providers for questions or concerns.
  • Assist other staff and support the team approach.
  • Participate in the efficient use of resources such as supplies and equipment.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly to management, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Prepare patients for provider exam, take vital signs, record patient history, and assist in office procedures.
  • Greet patients upon arrival.
  • Stock exam rooms with supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Maintain medical supplies and cleaning/sterilization of medical instruments and equipment.
  • Record height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, temperature, and notify provider of unusual changes.
  • Ensure patients have been properly instructed regarding preparations for tests/procedures.
  • Adhere to the Medical Assistant’s scope of practice at all times.
  • Perform selected clerical and administrative duties, and assist physicians as part of the care team.
  • Be willing to learn new procedures or accept new assignments.
  • Attend monthly team meetings at the corporate office.
  • Graduation from an accredited medical assisting program required.
  • Knowledge of Healthcare and Managed Care preferred.
  • Understanding of HMO processes.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Visio).
  • BLS Certification required within 30 days of employment.
