About The Position

UPMC Department of Orthopaedics is looking for a Medical Assistant to join their team in Shadyside! This position provides plenty of opportunity for growth and development, and is ideal for those passionate about patient care. The hours for this position will be Monday through Friday, primarily daylight hours from 8am to 4:30pm, with no evenings, weekends, or holidays required. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for both back office and front office duties, and previous Medical Assistant experience is preferred. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the Medical Assistant Career Ladder, based on their individual experience and education.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Medical Assistant experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other state and federal regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Prepare patient rooms and set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room and assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Collect patient information/history, take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families and answer calls providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKG's, and level one labs, and assist physicians with procedures.
  • Document patient information into the medical record.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
  • Administer injectable medication and vaccines under the direction and supervision of a physician.
