JOB SUMMARY: The OR Pre-Op/PACU Medical Assistant will participate as a member of the OSS Health Hospital PreOp/PACU team in planning, preparing, and implementing safe and effective patient care, while enhancing the OSS Health experience for patients undergoing surgery. SCHEDULE: Saturdays and Per Diem shifts.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Medical Assistant certification and/or Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, or the ability to obtain before working with patients.
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology is required.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work effectively.
  • Must possess strong computer skills and have the ability to learn new computer software on the job.
  • Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt to changes in the workload and work as part of the team to finish the schedule.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the delivery of patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the Preoperative and Post Anesthesia care areas to include but not limited to: transporting of patients, obtaining vital sings, preparation of IV bags, answering phone calls, medical record preparation, use of MedEnt and CPSI, cleaning of patient bays, beds, and equipment, stocking of supplies, handling of linen, trash, and biohazard waste.
  • Collects and documents patient care data and reports abnormalities to RN.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for care provided and tasks assigned.
  • Manages patient assignments effectively.
  • Utilizes appropriate safety and infection control practices.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient safety and proper body mechanics when moving patients or equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
  • Participates in educational activities, unit meetings, and quality initiatives.
  • Maintains skills as demonstrated through competency testing.
  • Responsible for daily restocking of patient care carts, daily ordering of unit supplies, and daily unit checks on glucometer temperature logs.
  • Assist with daily filling of unit ice pack freezer.
  • May assist with training newly hired staff and orienting new personnel as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
