About The Position

Marin Community Clinics, founded in 1972, is today, a multi-clinic network with a wide array of integrated primary care, dental, behavioral, specialty and referral services. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we provide vital health services to almost 40,000 individuals annually in Marin County. The Clinics regularly receive national awards from the Health Resources and Services Administrations (HRSA). Our Mission is to promote health and wellness through excellent, compassionate care for all. The Medical Assistant, Ophthalmology will perform a wide range of duties in the clinic, including supporting the Ophthalmologist. Tasks primarily involve assisting in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a Physician, Physician Assistant, Family Nurse Practitioner, and/or Ophthalmologist. Their duties include greeting patients, updating patient records and performing standard care procedures The Medical Assistant will have direct contact with patients and work closely with the Care Team. This position reports to the Medical Assistant Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program is required.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification from an accredited organization is required.
  • A minimum of 0-6 months of Medical Assistant work experience post graduating from Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal Skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and others in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Strong written and verbal English skills.
  • Knowledge of patient care and examination procedures.
  • Understanding of medical practices, administrative processes and organizational polices.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and experience with MS Office.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced community clinic environment.
  • Strong time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team environment setting.
  • Fulfill immunization and fit for duty regulatory requirements.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, and prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times and move medical equipment.
  • Fine motor hand movements typical of performing standard medical procedures.
  • Able to read charts graphs and readings on medical equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an externship program prior to graduation of Medical Assistant program is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with underserved communities in a community health clinic environment is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience using Electronic Health Records (EPIC) a plus.
  • Previous experience in ophthalmology or optometry setting strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology. Procedures and equipment.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) language skills preferred.
  • Flexibility / availability in schedules and shifts a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Escorts patients to the exam room and interviews patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs including pulse rate, temperature, height and weight.
  • Consistently uses good customer service, empathy and cultural sensitivity with patients throughout their encounters.
  • Administers patient screeners and adheres to care guidelines such as ACEs, PHQ, Columbia and others that may be sensitive in nature.
  • Accurately and promptly records information in Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
  • Uploads ultrasounds, patient photos, screen questionnaires in EHR.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments In accordance with department's policy and OSHA guidelines.
  • Works on in-box tasks sent by Provider or other members of the care team for follow up.
  • Arranges and coordinates video visits between providers and patients using a telehealth visit platform and troubleshoots any technical issues with patients.
  • Maintain medication supplies, checking for expiration date, and keeping exam rooms stocked.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) and other equipment to administer routine CLIA waived diagnostic tests and/or calls medical facility or department to schedule patients for tests.
  • Gives injections or treatments, and performs routine laboratory tests.
  • Follows policies and procedures including universal precautions as defined by OSHA's guidelines on Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazardous Materials standards.
  • Participates in and adheres to Care Team processes and procedures.
  • Works to demonstrate MCC's mission and values in all aspects of job performance.
  • Maintains confidentiality in strict accordance with department policy and HIPPA guidelines.
  • Attends and participates in required meetings, training and educational programs.
  • Performs administrative duties including checking eligibility, verifying demographics, assisting patients with filling out necessary paperwork, and making up follow-up appointments.
  • Help manage provider schedules, patient flow and provide wait time updates.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
  • Support the Ophthalmologist during eyes exams and minor in-office procedures.
  • Perform basic vision screenings and visual acuity tests.
  • Train patients to wear contact lenses.
  • Assist with dilation and instillation of ophthalmic drops.
  • Sterilize and maintain instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure exam rooms are cleaned and properly stocked with necessary instruments and supplies.
