About The Position

The Medical Assistant position at Advocate Health is a full-time role that requires adherence to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining training and competency based on the area of specialty when providing patient care. The role involves performing rooming and visit tasks such as taking vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, and screenings. The Medical Assistant will assist providers with procedures, perform lab-related duties including venipuncture and specimen collection, and complete CLIA approved waived laboratory tests. The position also includes administering medications and vaccines, maintaining a clean work environment, and ensuring that equipment and supplies are in working order. The Medical Assistant must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care and communicate effectively with patients and team members.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent military training.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification needs to be obtained within 45 days for certain divisions.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.
  • Proficient computer skills including navigation within a windows operating system and use of electronic medical records systems.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice and follows all policies and procedures.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, and screenings.
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, and results tracking.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, and appointment scheduling.
  • Cross trained to perform duties relevant to specialty or clinic practice.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication and teamwork.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
