The Medical Assistant – Lead provides direct patient care under the supervision of providers while ensuring a clean, safe, and supportive environment for patients. This role adapts procedures and techniques to meet complex clinical requirements and serves as a leader by answering questions, conducting training, and preparing educational materials for clinical team members. The Lead Medical Assistant models professionalism and compassion in alignment with West Cancer Center’s mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a medical facility as a Medical Assistant or similar healthcare role.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through one of the following: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) National Health Career Association (NHA) National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP) Registered as a Medical Assistant (RMA), American Registry of Medical Assistants
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with patients, families, and physicians.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and proficiency in all Lead Medical Assistant competencies.
  • Ability to engage patients with professionalism, compassion, and clear communication.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and ability to review reports using evidence-based guidelines.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in motivational interviewing and patient education techniques.
  • Ability to act quickly in emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in the lead capacity for Medical Assistants within the physician office.
  • Provide patient care responsibilities as requested by physicians or other clinicians.
  • Support patient visits by greeting patients, obtaining vitals, and documenting in the EMR.
  • Assist with clinical responsibilities, including preparing exam rooms, instruments, and equipment.
  • Complete competency assessments and skills checklists for Lead Medical Assistant requirements.
  • Train and support team members, fostering professional growth and adherence to best practices.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach-back techniques.
  • Act quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
