ROLE OVERVIEW and PURPOSE: The Medical Assistant, Laboratory Services will communicate and provide excellent patient-care services in our clinical laboratory. This role will take vitals, verify/record patients’ identity in their medical charts, and other exam room duties. Additionally, this role will draw blood from patients and donors for analysis or other specified medical purposes.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED required
- Valid medical assistant certificate from an accredited program required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire and must be maintained as a condition of employment. These courses must follow AHA guidelines- may be completed through approved online providers such as ProMed or other equivalent programs that meet recognized BLS standards.
- Familiarity with medical procedures and terminology
- Proficiency with electronic health records system experience preferred
- Intermediate computer and data entry skills
- Must use sound judgment to anticipate needs of patients and providers
- Flexibility with changing priorities and time sensitive deadlines
- Use emotional and cultural intelligence to provide appropriate communication and patient care
- Exemplify compassion to patients and team members
- Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
- Ability to work with highly confidential information in a professional and ethical manner

Responsibilities
- Takes patient vital signs and obtains patient intake information
- Performs clinical procedures, such as blood draws, vaccines, nebulizer treatments, ear lavages, or EKGs
- Assesses patient needs and provides education and resources accordingly
- Ensures exam rooms are stocked, cleaned, and ready for examinations and procedures
- Assembles equipment according to standard protocols for specified tests and procedures, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collections devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray
- Conducts interviews with patients and donors to verify their identity to their corresponding medical labels for blood samples
- Provides patients and donors an overview and instruction of the procedures they will be conducting; answer any patient questions pertaining to instructions or procedures
- Follows all standard protocols for drawing blood from patients and donors; seek assistance from a supervisor for any complications outside of standard protocol
- Dispose of all used apparatuses in their designated receptables
- Provide patients and donors with post blood draw instructions
- Completes ongoing/annual training for position compliance
- Performs quality control by checking daily temperatures and performing routine controls for testing at the sites
- Prepares EOM report to submit to the Laboratory Operations Manager
