About The Position

We are seeking applications for Medical Assistant adjunct instructors and substitutes at Renton Technical College (RTC). This instructor will be responsible for providing individualized and/or group instruction for adults entering the Medical Assistant profession. The instructor must utilize instructional plans, direct and assess student progress in achieving theory and performance requirements of the program. Curriculum includes anatomy; physiology; basic math and math for pharmacology; principles of pharmacology; medical terminology, front/back office clinical skills; basic administrative skills; law and ethics, as these subjects relate to the role of a medical assistant; communication; human relations; electronic medical records, professionalism; and job search. The instructor will supervise students during practicum and assist students in obtaining jobs. Other professional responsibilities include: serving as an ad hoc member of the program's advisory committee; serving on departmental and college committees; participating in professional improvement activities; and performing other related duties as may be assigned by the dean. This position is scheduled to begin upon selection. The Dean of Allied Health reviews applications as needed to fill openings during the 2024 - 25 academic year.

Requirements

  • Medical Assistant with credentials through the AAMA or RMA.
  • Three years of recent experience in educational or clinical setting.
  • Experience with some form of computer curriculum delivery system and applying current technology in instruction.
  • Have or acquire within 90 days of initial employment an industrial first aid certificate and Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
  • Documentation of current immunization and health requirements within 6 months of hire date is required.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check upon hire and annually.
  • Have taken, or after initial employment begin taking, professional-technical teacher training courses.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to work professionally and effectively with students, faculty, staff, colleagues and community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Successful experience using tact, discretion and courtesy while interacting with all persons.
  • Knowledge of, understanding of, and commitment to the education role and philosophy of the community and technical colleges.

Nice To Haves

  • AAS or advanced degree is preferred.
  • Successful teaching experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate multicultural competence and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and instruct students on the course topic, in a hybrid format.
  • Effectively teach the adopted curriculum for the medical assistant program.
  • Provide for the orderly conduct of program learning activities, individual student learning needs, and the appropriate evaluation of student progress towards attaining the learning outcomes.
  • Perform and teach psychomotor and affective competencies in the clinical setting according to MAERB policies.
  • Inventory supplies and equipment for clinical needs.
  • Follow all safety standards according to appropriate agencies including OSHA and WA DOH.
  • Develop and update the curriculum on a regular basis in collaboration with program faculty.
  • Maintain and submit student records, documentation, and program reports, including assessment data.
  • Evaluate student progress towards attaining the learning outcomes to include individual assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests.
  • Perform student recruitment and job placement activities.
  • Communicate with students through a combination of office hours and online communication, using the Canvas Learning Management System, and email.
  • Support the college's mission by creating a learning environment of mutual respect and fairness.
  • Maintain and ensure program performance and competency standards are met.
  • Maintain confidentiality, think critically and exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Administer and interpret college procedures; resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
  • Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for diverse and underrepresented and underserved student populations.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Benefits

  • Lecture (theory) credits are compensated at $1,058 per credit, which includes scheduled class time and final exam days.
  • All guided practice instructional credits for adjunct will be paid with an additional pay factor of 1.33.
  • Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $1,592 per credit, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.
  • Master's or Doctorate degree stipends are paid on a prorated per credit rate.
