About The Position

The Medical Assistant II works under the direction of the health care provider to deliver patient care, promote the safety and wellbeing of all patients. Oversees the cleanliness of exam and treatment rooms and monitors patient care rooms and nurse’s stations. Coordinates communications with patients, informs patients of community resources, and drives the Mobile Clinic.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three years of experience working in a clinical environment, hospital, home health setting, or other related areas
  • State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in public health or a Health-related discipline.
  • Department of State Health Services (DSHS) certification, certified Community Health Worker (CHW), or able to successfully complete the CHW certification within three months of employment
  • Experience working with individuals in rural or medically underserved communities
  • Experience in scheduling patient appointments
  • Experience in data collection and reporting
  • Knowledge of enrollment requirements for Texas Medicaid and CHIP or a willingness to learn
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish
  • Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a Driver for mobile clinics in a University vehicle.
  • Serves as the lead community-based provider and is responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and wellbeing of all patients.
  • Measures vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse respiration and obtains height and weight.
  • Interviews patients for updated medical history and documents information and other activities in the electronic medical records.
  • Prepares patients for tests, exams, and procedures and provides basic patient education.
  • Performs basic procedures including, but not limited to: injections, vision screening, auditory exams, ear lavage, EKG, minor wound care, nebulizer treatments, throat swabs, fitting ortho slings, splints, etc.
  • Assists and/or chaperones nurse practitioner during exams or procedures, transfers specimen, and documents testing and lab results in medical records.
  • Serves as a liaison between patient and providers.
  • Prepares and administers injections and dispenses medication as directed by nurse practitioner.
  • Oversees and ensures the cleanliness of exam and treatment rooms are maintained at the highest standards to prevent spread of infection in patient-care areas.
  • Monitors and maintains supply and inventory of clinical supplies, including the stocking of patient care exam rooms and common areas to ensure supplies are on hand as needed for patient care.
  • Accurately maintains daily activity logs regarding client activity and destinations.
  • Identifies and coordinates community resources.
  • Continuously expands knowledge and understanding of community resources and service programs provided.
  • Escalates non-routine issues, questions and/or concerns to the supervisor or healthcare provider(s).
  • Serves as a mentor and assists supervisor with training and supervision of student workers.
  • Works under the direction of the health care provider.
  • Coordinates scheduling of patient follow-up appointments with available providers.
  • Provides verbal and/or written communication to patients and to providers.
  • Identifies and provides available resources to patients in their own communities.
  • Compiles data and creates reports.
  • Assists with registering patients in the electronic health record system.
  • Obtains medical records and laboratory results from providers and ensures clinic providers are aware of the results.
  • Performs office projects and tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Fills in for others and performs other duties as assigned to assist other team members.
