About The Position

The Medical Assistant II at Atrium Health Mt Island Family Medicine is responsible for adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining training and competency in patient care. Key tasks include performing rooming/visit duties such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and various screenings. The role involves assisting providers with procedures, performing lab-related duties like venipuncture, specimen collection, and results tracking, as well as conducting Point of Care testing and CLIA-approved waived laboratory tests. Administering medications and vaccines safely is also a core responsibility. Additional duties encompass medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, ordering supplies, appointment scheduling, and referrals. The position requires cross-training relevant to the specialty or clinic practice, maintaining a clean and stocked work environment, and demonstrating effective communication and teamwork. The Medical Assistant must also possess the knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles across the lifespan. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest).
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent).
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required (for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent).
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest).
  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • American Allied Health (AAH) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • National Health Career Association (NHA) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • (MCMA) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA) certification (for Wake Forest).
  • No Experience Required.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (for Wake Forest).

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Cross trained to perform duties that are relevant to specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
