About The Position

As one of the fastest-growing academic health centers in the nation, Texas A&M Health encompasses five colleges and numerous centers and institutes working together to improve health through transformative education, innovative research and team-based health care delivery. The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing direct patient care in coordination with clinicians. Conducts basic office-based medical tasks and performs basic clinical procedures to include injection and medication administrations. Cleans, sterilizes, and stocks exam rooms and medical equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of relevant experience in customer service in a healthcare setting, including work as a medical receptionist or roles involving patient customer care in a medical office, hospital, nursing home, home health agency, or a closely related area.
  • Must obtain Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification or registration or have the ability to obtain it within 6 months of employment and maintain active certification as a condition of continued employment.
  • Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Eligible for certification or registration through one of the following: American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) National Healthcareer Association (NHA) National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a college healthcare environment.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant course of study.
  • 2 years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical office, hospital, nursing home, home health agency, or a closely related area.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care activities daily.
  • Transfers patients from reception area to exam rooms, measures vital signs, obtains height and weight, interviews patients for medical history, and updates health information in the EHR.
  • Administers medications and injections as directed by a clinician.
  • Performs basic procedures including EKGs, vision/hearing screening, ear lavage, spirometry, nebulizer treatments, swabs, and fitting orthopedic supplies.
  • Prepares patients for exams and explains procedures.
  • Assists and/or chaperones providers during exams.
  • Documents care activities in the EHR.
  • Greets patients and provides assistance and direction.
  • Answers telephone and responds to routine inquiries or transfers calls.
  • Obtains electronic signatures for consent to treat.
  • Assists with inventory and office equipment maintenance.
  • Stocks patient care areas as needed.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes exam rooms and medical instruments per infection control policies.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment.
  • Completes continuing education as required by certifying board and department policy.
  • May assist in training student worker nursing assistants.
  • Participates on committees as assigned.
