About The Position

The Medical Assistant I ensure optimum patient care through the efficient rooming of patients, exhibiting good communication with patients and other staff, performing medical procedures, providing patient education, follow-up care instructions, and completing daily documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited medical assistant program in California; CA Medical Assistant certification required.
  • Phlebotomy Certificate required for some locations.
  • Entry level position up to one year of experience.
  • Must certify and remain current in CPR.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; Bilingual (English/Spanish) language required.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.
  • Computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite, strong data entry skills; electronic health record system required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail required.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for greeting patients into exam room areas and driving a positive patient customer service experience
  • Rooms patients, obtains and documents vital signs including height, weight, BMI, temperature, respirations and blood pressure
  • Collects and documents patient history and current state of health
  • Disinfects and prepares treatment rooms, equipment and supplies in a timely manner to ensure optimum flow
  • Provides patient education and follow-up care instructions
  • Performs panel management and non-visit tasks as assigned by Provider or Nurse
  • Creates and distributes an up to date On Call calendar for afterhours Provider coverage
  • Works closely with providers to provide high quality care to each patient by addressing their health needs and concerns
  • Proactively ensure that Provider/MA “huddles” take place on time in preparation for each shift
  • Performs routine screening procedures, such as hearing and vision test and document findings
  • Performs various medical assistant procedures, including but not limited to:  finger sticks for hemoglobin checks; ear washes; nebulizer treatments; urine dipsticks; specimen collection for throat and/or urine cultures; wound cleaning; PPD placement; INR; glucose; HCG; and Hemoglobin A1C (some procedures may not be applicable to all sites)
  • Administers immunizations and documents in electronic health record
  • Ensures that all logs, forms, records and charts are complete, thorough and accurate
  • Documents freezer & refrigerator temperature and takes appropriate action to maintain correct temperatures
  • Runs quality assurance tests daily to ensure proper functionality of equipment for in-house testing
  • Practices standard safety precautions to ensure safety to self, other staff and patients, including handling of contained waste and sharps, and cleaning and disinfecting medical equipment after use
  • Communicates clearly with providers, other staff and patients to promote optimum clinic flow and proper patient hand off; communicates with Care Team Operations Supervisor on urgent issues
  • Proactively helps teammates during down time
  • Recommends improvement in processes and practices through the proper channels
  • Performs other duties as assigned
