About The Position

The Medical Assistant position at Advocate Health is a part-time role requiring 8 hours of work per week, scheduled on a PRN basis from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. The pay range for this position is between $21.45 and $32.20 per hour. The role involves adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining training and competency based on the area of specialty when providing patient care. Responsibilities include performing rooming/visit tasks, assisting providers with procedures, performing lab-related duties, administering medications and vaccines, and maintaining a clean work environment. The position requires effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent military training.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required.
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the AHA needs to be obtained within 45 days unless exempted by department leader.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.
  • Certification from recognized medical assistant organizations such as AAMA, AMT, AAH, NHCWA, NHA, MCMA, NAHP, NRMA.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice and follows all policies and procedures.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings.
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab-related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Cross trained to perform duties relevant to specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
