About The Position

The Medical Assistant - HIV/STD Counselor at APLA Health will provide patient care services under the direction of licensed healthcare providers, focusing on culturally appropriate HIV/STD services. This role involves working collaboratively with prevention program staff to identify and link HIV positive individuals to medical care, while performing both administrative and clinical duties in a medical clinic setting.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant training program in a recognized institution.
  • Successful completion of LA County's Division of HIV and STD Programs' HIV Test Counselor Certification within the first 90 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and patient care methods.
  • Ability to perform technical clinical procedures including phlebotomy and administering injections.
  • Understanding of HIV infection, STD infection/treatment, and health education principles.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting focusing on HIV/STD counseling and prevention.
  • Familiarity with community resources related to HIV/STD services.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and register patients, assist with necessary forms, answer phones, and schedule appointments.
  • Provide pre/post test client-centered HIV counseling.
  • Conduct HIV/STD risk assessments.
  • Provide HIV/STD risk reduction and prevention coaching/counseling.
  • Prepare treatment rooms, ensuring cleanliness and necessary supplies are stocked.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and history; measure and record vital signs, height, weight, and BMI.
  • Perform phlebotomy to collect blood samples and other non-invasive specimens; log specimens for testing.
  • Provide counseling and rapid HIV testing to clients seeking those services.
  • Maintain monthly equipment logs for medical devices.
  • Develop strategies to improve linkage to HIV primary medical care for recently diagnosed individuals and those who have dropped out of care.
  • Assist physicians and nurses in examining and treating patients, including administering medications and injections as ordered.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports as requested.
  • Maintain HIV/STD testing records to ensure compliance with documentation requirements.
  • Carry out patient discharge processes and provide follow-up care instructions and referrals.
  • Administer CPR in medical emergencies.
