About The Position

The Medical Assistant at UPMC will support physicians in various aspects of patient care, ensuring patient satisfaction through clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. This role involves direct patient interaction, assisting with examinations, managing patient records, and maintaining compliance with health regulations. The position requires flexibility with rotating shifts and occasional Saturday work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities are required.
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) or certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) is required for Senior Medical Assistant position.
  • At least 1 year of patient care experience is required for Senior Medical Assistant position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room and assist as needed.
  • Collect patient information/history, taking vitals, and performing screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare patient rooms and set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and restock exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure, including phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and administer injectable medication and vaccines under supervision.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies and maintain confidentiality of medical records.
  • Perform other front office responsibilities as required.
