This Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program is up to 1 year apprenticeship, with ability to earn certification within 6 months. Eighteen month total commitment to Bon Secours Mercy Health. This apprenticeship program will be a registered US Department of Labor program. Apprentices are hired at a full-time status as employees in the role of a non-certified Medical Assistant Apprentice with Bon Secours Mercy Health, and will also be enrolled as a student with Cincinnati State. Apprentices simultaneously participate in related technical instruction (RTI), through Cincinnati State, and on-the-job learning (OJL), through Bon Secours Mercy Health Medical Group, for this apprenticeship. In addition to RTI and OJL, Apprentices will also engage in self-led study time. During the apprenticeship, apprentices are required to complete at least 2000 hours of OJL conducted at a Cincinnati based Bon Mercy Health Medical group location, and 144 hours of RTI conducted at Cincinnati State. Apprentices will be supervised by a preceptor or mentor while working and completing their OJL. All BSMH policies apply to the Medical Assistant Apprentice for RTI & OJL including the attendance policy. At the end of the apprenticeship, Apprentices will be required to sit and pass the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam, and have the opportunity to obtain a non-credit Medical Assistant Workforce Certificate from Cincinnati State. Once apprenticeship is completed, and CCMA exam passed, associate has the opportunity to progress from the Apprenticeship role into a Certified Medical Assistant position within the Bon Secours Mercy Health Medical Group. Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position The Medical Assistant Apprentice serves in a rigorous apprenticeship program for up to one year and is a multi-skilled clinical professional that provides indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice and in alignment with the standards of excellence and quality. Under the direction of the provider, the Medical Assistant Apprentice contributes to the completion of the patient’s chief complaint (e.g., respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature), documents patient/family needs, participates in planning and implementing care for patients, and may administer ordered medications (according to state laws and regulations) (e.g., oral, injection, topically, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
