About The Position

This entry-level position Medical Assistant Apprentice is apt to provide hands-on training and experience in the healthcare field under the guidance and supervision of experienced healthcare professionals. This apprenticeship aims to develop the apprentice's skills in both clinical and administrative tasks, preparing them for a full-time role as a Medical Assistant. The apprentice will work closely with medical staff and patients, learning how to support patient care, manage medical records, and perform various office duties in a healthcare setting.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • The minimum age qualification required by the Apprenticeship Committee, Sponsor, or Participating Employer for persons entering the Apprenticeship Program is: 18 years.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the theoretical component of instructions designed to provide the Apprentice with knowledge of Medical Assistant occupation.
  • Complete assigned modules, workshops, competencies and educational activities as part of the apprenticeship program.
  • Enhance understanding of medical terminology through structured methods such as flashcards, quizzes, or interactive exercises.
  • Adhere and practice hands-on training that occurs in the actual work environment.
  • The apprentices will perform tasks and duties under the supervision of experienced professionals.
  • Engage in day-to-day medical assistant tasks such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and assisting with patient exams under the supervision of experienced professionals.
  • By obtaining sign-off from the preceptor, confirms formal approval that the apprentice was able to demonstrate proficiency across defined competencies. This ensures they are fully prepared to perform the independent tasks required of a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • Assist in preparing patients for examinations and procedures by taking vital signs, recording medical histories, and providing comfort and reassurance.
  • Support healthcare providers during patient exams by preparing exam rooms, organizing instruments, and ensuring that all necessary supplies are available.
  • Perform basic clinical tasks such as drawing blood, administering injections, vaccines and assisting with minor procedures under supervision and as ordered by the licensed Independent Provider (LIP).
  • Supervise venipunctures and/or capillary punctures to draw blood samples for testing (LIP).
  • Follow proper procedures for labeling, handling, and transporting specimens to ensure accuracy, prevent contamination.
  • Supervise administration of oral, topical, sublingual, or injectable medications as directed by the licensed Independent Provider (LIP) except intravenous medications.
  • Clean, dress, and bandage superficial wounds as ordered by the (LIP).
  • Conduct simple in-house CLIA waived tests, as ordered by the (LIP).
  • Perform and document regular quality control tests to ensure the accuracy of lab results and the proper functioning of lab equipment.
  • Practice and maintain aseptic techniques during clinical procedures to prevent infections.
  • Clean and disinfect exam rooms, equipment, and surfaces following each patient encounter and policy.
  • Sterilize medical instruments and equipment using autoclaves or other sterilization methods.
  • Use appropriate PPE (gloves, masks, gowns) to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
  • Ensure that biohazardous waste is collected and removed according to organizational procedures.
  • Provide patients with clear instructions regarding post-visit care, medication use, and follow-up appointments.
  • Learn to perform clinical procedures such as electrocardiogram (ECG), Ear Lavage, Ear Suction, Suture Removal, Diabetic Retinal Examination (DRE), Tuberculosis Skin Test and Reading, Vision Exam with Snellen chart and/or digital camera as ordered by the (LIP).
  • Demonstrate age-specific competencies to provide safe, effective, and personalized care. Can understand and address the physical, emotional, developmental, and social needs of each age group to ensures high-quality care:
  • Must obtain sign-off from the preceptor, confirms formal approval that the CCA was able to demonstrate proficiency across defined competencies following designated time for each task. This ensures they are fully prepared to perform the independent tasks required of a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, provide basic first aid, and assist in stabilizing patients under supervision and as ordered by the (LIP).
  • Provides care with cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Support the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date patient records by entering data, filing documents, and managing electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Perform general office tasks such as answering phones, handling, and managing inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with billing, coding, and insurance claims processing under the guidance of experienced staff.
  • Perform Pre-Visit Planning to gather information needed prior to patient visit.
  • Responses to telephone encounters and actions in a timely manner.
  • Urgent Care Patient Follow-Up Documentation and Calls.
  • Communicable Disease Reporting.
