About The Position

The Medical Assistant Apprentice position is an opportunity for those in the Pierre area to attend St. Ambrose University online to complete Medical Assistant schooling and certification. The Apprentice will work full-time at the Clinic while also attending school online full-time for 4-6 months. Avera requires a 3-year commitment working as a Medical Assistant once schooling and certification are complete. A Brief Overview Performs selected medical assistant and clerical duties that assist in care for clinic patients following established standards, practices, and competency. Works collaboratively with other clinic staff to solve practice-related problems. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of the patient/customer's status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the population served in the department.

  • High School or GED Equivalent
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA) within 2 Years or
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) within 2 Years or
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) within 2 Years or
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 2 Years or
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) within 2 Years or

Responsibilities

  • Assists in care to patients as directed by provider based on competency.
  • Provides accurate, completed, legible and timely documentation of all patient procedures in the medical record.
  • Maintains timely flow of patients.
  • Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests. Responsible for assisting with patient and family education to include procedures, medication use, nutrition, disease processes, and maintenance of health and wellness, etc., based on competency.
  • Greets patients and conducts clinical interview collecting history and vital signs.
  • Labels and processes lab specimens according to lab procedures.
  • Maintains exam room for necessary supplies and materials. Performs daily and weekly environmental cleaning and equipment quality control and maintenance. Cleans and sterilizes medical equipment according to policy. Follows correct procedures for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous infectious waste.
  • Provided back-up help for front desk personnel. This may include answering telephone, scheduling and canceling appointments, and scheduling consult patients.
