About The Position

The Administrative Medical Assistant at BHMG Primary Care in Lexington, KY, is responsible for the coordination of direct patient care activities and providing clinical and administrative support to providers. This role involves managing the flow of patients to create an exceptional patient experience, proactively checking provider schedules, and reviewing patient records to ensure all necessary information is available. The assistant will obtain missing information from patients to maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records. Duties include checking in patients, obtaining vital signs, medication reconciliation, gathering patient medical history, rooming patients, stocking clinic supplies, navigating the electronic health record system (EPIC), scheduling and following up on appointments, assisting with medication fill/refill requests, checking for prior authorizations, and scheduling tests, procedures, and consultations. The position may also involve performing procedures such as EKG, phlebotomy, lab tests, and injections once competency is assessed, and requires compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements including HIPAA/OSHA.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Equivalency.
  • Experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical office, clinic or similar setting required.
  • Experience must include direct, hands-on patient care in a clinical setting, such as obtaining vital signs, documenting patient history and medications, and performing clinical procedures (e.g. EKG’s, phlebotomy, administering injections or vaccines).
  • Successfully complete MA orientation upon hire.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire.
  • BAT and DOT certifications required for Medical Assistants in Occupational Medicine within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate direct patient care activities.
  • Provide clinical and administrative support to providers.
  • Check in patients.
  • Obtain vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, temperature).
  • Perform medication reconciliation.
  • Obtain patient medical history information.
  • Expedite patient flow.
  • Room patients.
  • Stock clinic with supplies.
  • Navigate electronic health record system (EPIC).
  • Schedule and follow-up with appointments.
  • Assist with medication fill and refill requests.
  • Check for prior authorizations.
  • Schedule tests, procedures and consultations.
  • Perform other procedures such as EKG, phlebotomy, lab tests and injections (once competency has been assessed).
  • Manage the coordination and flow of patients throughout the patients visit to create an exceptional patient experience.
  • Proactively check the provider’s schedule and review information within the patient record to ensure that all required information is available prior to their visit.
  • Proactively obtain any missing information from the patient to ensure that medical records are accurate and up to date.
  • Upon arrival, capture patient’s vital signs, past medical, social and family history, medication usage and preferred pharmacy information.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements including HIPAA/OSHA compliance.
  • Respond to patient call backs and phone in prescription refill requests.
  • Administer medication and injections, as directed by Physician/Provider.
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients, as directed by the Physician/ Provider.
  • Perform EKG’s, PFT’s spirometry, nebulizer treatments and ear irrigations, and other procedures, as required by the practice and directed by the Physician/Provider.
  • Perform in-office lab testing such as glucose testing, strep screens, pregnancy tests, urinalysis, and HgA1c as directed by the physician/provider.
  • Perform sterilization on instruments used for minor procedures/surgeries according to the CDC recommended guidelines.
  • Maintain all certifications/licensures as required by the scope of the role being performed.
