About The Position

Students can participate in a work-based internship after successfully completing the prerequisite courses in the Health Science Education Program of Study. The student is a high school senior selected to participate in the MedEx program in either Cabell or Wayne County. The student chooses a health career pathway for in-depth study for a Patient Care Technician or a Medical Assistant. They will be part of the patient care team in the designated clinical location. Marshall Health Network System-Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Awareness and Sensitivity to Client Needs Behaviors for Success in Healthcare Settings Communication in Healthcare Settings Legal Issues in Healthcare Healthcare Safety and Standard Precautions Technical Skills Treatment Planning and Implementation Monitoring Client Status Patient/Client Status Evaluation Note: No student is permitted to perform a skill at a clinical facility without classroom or clinical agency instruction, instructor/preceptor demonstration, lab practice (multiple times), and instructor/preceptor check-off of student satisfactory performance.

Requirements

  • Current instruction is guided by a career-specific focus on employability skills, career development, and applying healthcare information technology and technical skills. West Virginia guides the curriculum under The State Department of Education standards.
  • 0711 - Foundations of Health Science: This course allows instructional content to focus on basic medical terminology, growth and development, nutrition, health maintenance practices, and healthcare delivery systems. It is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and technical skills required for infection control and disease transmission, CPR, and First Aid prevention. Students will have the opportunity to acquire certification in these areas.
  • 0715 - Advanced Principles of Health Science: Instructional content will focus on healthcare safety, environmental safety processes and procedures, ethical and legal responsibilities, and mathematical computations. The course includes medical terminology and the reinforcement, expansion, and enhancement of biology content specific to diseases and disorders. Instruction will incorporate project and problem-based healthcare practices and procedures to demonstrate the importance of these skills. Students will develop basic technical skills required for all health career specialties, including patient privacy, communication, teamwork, and occupational safety, and be provided with opportunities to obtain certifications in HIPAA/Data Privacy and health care safety.
  • 0789 - Clinical Specialty I / 0790 Clinical Specialty II: These courses are designed to allow the student to obtain work-based experience at Marshall Health Network facilities in the following specializations: Patient Care Technician and Medical Assistant. Students choose a specialty for in-depth study and must complete at least 25-55 hours in an applicable clinical rotation. Instruction is guided by career-specific content skill sets that must be mastered before students are eligible to attain established credentials and/or industry validation. Within this course, students focus on employability skills and career development and apply healthcare information technology and technical skills. Instruction will incorporate project and problem-based healthcare practices and procedures to demonstrate the criticality of these skills. Students utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands-on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts.
  • No prior experience is required; the student must have completed at least 10 hours of job shadowing during their junior year of high school while enrolled in the MedEx problem.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the clinical meeting area on time and in full, appropriate uniform.
  • Pre-plan clinical assignment as instructed.
  • Identify and look up unfamiliar terminology to build a medical vocabulary. Read the chart. Improve your working knowledge each clinical day.
  • Remember to perform only those skills taught in class, practiced in the lab/clinical site, and checked off.
  • Evaluate the clinical experiences as an important part of each course of study and each assignment as part of the learning experience.
  • Keep complaints to a minimum and present them constructively in discussing ways to improve. We are not in the business of evaluating clinical facilities.
  • Keep clinical sites neat and clean. Return all materials to their appropriate place.
  • Seek verbal permission from the instructor/preceptor before leaving any clinical area.
  • Request an individual conference with the instructor to resolve problems or concerns.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Request to perform skills and procedures that are checked off. It is the student’s responsibility to master skills and procedures. Seek instructor/preceptor permission and validate before each procedure.
  • Keep busy. Ask if there is work that you can do or how you can help.
  • Maintain required clinical documentation.
  • Show an interest in your work/assignment.
  • Show respect to all office personnel and patients.
  • Follow the cell phone procedure determined by the instructor and the MedEx program.
