About The Position

The position involves performing laboratory testing of biological specimens in an acute setting across various specialty areas using both manual and automated techniques. The role requires independent judgment and cognitive skills to report timely and accurate laboratory results. Responsibilities include performing, evaluating, and monitoring laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols, selecting and performing additional procedures when necessary. The individual will monitor workflow, evaluate results for clinical significance, and ensure compliance with reporting policies. Additionally, the role involves calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment, as well as quality control and assurance tasks. The position also includes specimen collection from patients of all ages and providing training and technical assistance to laboratory staff. The individual will support critical care departments by providing timely laboratory results during high acuity patient events and will assist in improving laboratory procedures and compliance with accrediting agency standards.

Requirements

  • Medical Technologist (MT) certification or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification to be obtained within 1 year.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology or related field.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include alternate site assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing of biological specimens in various specialty areas.
  • Use independent judgment to report timely and accurate laboratory results.
  • Monitor workflow and make necessary adjustments to complete work in an appropriate time frame.
  • Evaluate results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness.
  • Perform and document calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment.
  • Recognize indicators of test and/or instrument malfunction and implement appropriate corrections.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance for improvement according to established protocols.
  • Collect specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to medical laboratory technicians and support staff.
  • Assist in the development of education and training protocols for students and new team members.
  • Ensure compliance with all accrediting agency standards and support CAP Regulatory requirements.
  • Perform internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
