About The Position

The Medical Assistant position at Thompson Oncology Group involves coordinating and performing both clerical and clinical activities within the Medical Oncology Office. This role is essential in supporting the delivery of high-quality cancer care and treatment, ensuring that patient records are maintained accurately and that patients receive timely assistance and care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; any combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential tasks is acceptable.
  • Four years of healthcare experience preferred but not required.
  • LPN License, CNA certification, or MA certification preferred.
  • CPR certification required.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain patient charts including insurance, registration, correspondence, laboratory and radiology reports.
  • Schedule and coordinate appointments, scans, and tests; confirm appointments and notify appropriate departments of patient schedules.
  • Receive telephone calls and assist patients, physicians, and others with patient-related matters; relay diagnostic test results as directed by the physician.
  • Assist physicians with procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, biopsies, paracentesis, and thoracentesis.
  • Perform vital signs checks (BP, TPR, weight) and alert physicians of any abnormalities.
  • Conduct medical history assessments for each patient prior to their appointment with the physician.
  • Prepare monthly statistical data for reporting to the Administrator.
  • Maintain medical and clerical supplies in the office and exam rooms.
  • Conduct daily billing of patient accounts and work with the Business Office for necessary adjustments.
  • Monitor patient insurance for hospital admission pre-certification requirements and assist with reimbursement issues.
  • Complete forms for continuity of care, including patient insurance and home health/hospice forms.
  • Precertify insurance coverage for procedures and treatments ordered by the physician.
  • Engage in professional growth through seminars and workshops to stay updated in the field.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in committees as directed.
  • Serve on professional or civic service organizations as a hospital representative.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
