Mechatronics Engineer (SATCOM R&D)

Communications & Power Industries (CPI)
Onsite

About The Position

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a strong Mechatronics focus to support Internal Research & Development (IRAD) efforts within advanced SATCOM antenna and electromechanical systems. This role is responsible for designing, prototyping, and maturing automated mechanisms that integrate mechanical structures, motors, gearing, sensors, and control systems. You will work across the full product lifecycle — from concept development and rapid prototyping through validation and manufacturing transition — in a fast-paced R&D environment. The ideal candidate combines hands-on engineering capability with strong CAD design skills and an understanding of motion control, sensing, and electromechanical integration.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related field with 4+ years of relevant experience OR 8+ years of directly related experience in lieu of degree
  • Experience designing electromechanical systems and automated mechanisms
  • Minimum of 4 years of SolidWorks 3D CAD proficiency
  • Working knowledge of motors, gearing, sensors, and motion control systems
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience creating 2D drawings and engineering documentation using SolidWorks
  • Understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14.5)
  • Familiarity with materials, finishes, and hardware selection
  • Exposure to basic stress, tolerance, and thermal analysis
  • Hands-on experience with assembly tools and prototype builds
  • Ability to use electronic test equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, etc.)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills in a prototype-driven environment
  • Ability to work within cost, schedule, and technical trade spaces
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SATCOM antennas, tracking systems, or precision pointing mechanisms
  • Exposure to servo systems or motion control development
  • Experience working in IRAD or R&D environments
  • Familiarity with configuration management and change control processes
  • Experience supporting prototype-to-production transitions

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electromechanical systems integrating motors, gearboxes, encoders, resolvers, and position feedback devices
  • Support IRAD development from concept through prototype, testing, and manufacturing transition
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Using SolidWorks, generate 2D drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation for fabrication and assembly
  • Integrate sensing and actuation components and understand their interaction with control systems and software
  • Collaborate with electrical and controls engineers on system architecture and interface definitions
  • Develop and revise electrical drawings and schematic documentation as required
  • Support prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, and production issue resolution
  • Use test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition tools to support system validation
  • Produce manufacturing documentation and support design for manufacturability (DFM) improvements
  • Create and process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and maintain configuration control
  • Ensure designs conform to applicable engineering drafting standards and best practices

Benefits

  • attractive compensation package
  • competitive salaries
  • comprehensive benefits
  • health and wellness programs
  • career development
  • generous retirement savings plan with company match
