About The Position

As Mechatronics Engineer, you will own the design, automation, and reliability of our electromechanical systems, from greenhouse climate and fertigation to water recovery (UF/RO/CIP) and downstream processing/packaging. As the owner of the controls and mechatronics lead, you will translate operational requirements into robust hardware, clean code, and stable systems that enable seamless production. In the near term, you will focus on expanding and strengthening our Texas operations. Long term, you will standardize a controls architecture that can be deployed globally to support Plantible’s growth and scalability. Location: If located in Austin, TX, regular travel will be required to our Eldorado, TX site and vendors; occasional international travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 4–10+ years of experience in industrial automation or mechatronics (e.g., food, water, controlled environment agriculture, bioprocessing, chemicals) with full lifecycle exposure from design to commissioning to run-at-rate operations.
  • Proficient in controls systems (PLC/HMI/SCADA), sensors and instrumentation, motion control and VFDs, and electrical fundamentals.
  • Hands-on experience deploying remote sensing and telemetry at scale (environmental monitoring, water/process systems, equipment health); exposure to basic vision systems a plus.
  • Skilled at translating PFDs, P&IDs, and layouts into functional systems, with strong troubleshooting abilities in the field.
  • Clear and effective communicator with a disciplined approach to documentation, change control, and vendor coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Design and integrate new electrical, automation, and mechanical systems for Plantible’s novel manufacturing modules, including remote sensing.
  • Design electrical layouts and power systems to build Plantible’s cultivation and processing facilities, and oversee their construction from empty fields to automated production operations.
  • Work with external contractors and vendors to bring designs to life, including creating design specifications, checking wiring diagrams, verifying mechanical layouts, and performing Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs).
  • Integrate sensors, transmitters, and actuators with Plantible’s control software and SCADA systems.
  • Drive reliability by reducing downtime through root cause analysis, maintenance playbooks, and pragmatic continuous improvement.
  • Operate at the interface of mechanical design, motion control, sensor development, data science, and material handling.
