About The Position

AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected. Position Overview We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Mechanisms Engineer to support the integration, testing, and flight operations of spacecraft mechanisms. The candidate will work hands-on in a dynamic environment, collaborating closely with design, test, and operations teams to ensure successful system level qualification, and flight operations of spacecraft mechanisms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of relevant experience in aerospace or precision hardware assembly/test.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering and production teams
  • Proven problem-solving mindset and ownership mentality
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy of documentation and project deliverables
  • Proactive, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Software tools: Python, C/C++, Bash, Git
  • Test/Data Acquisition: LabVIEW, Dewesoft, or similar systems
  • CAD Tools: AutoDesk Inventor, SolidWorks, NX, or Creo
  • General Tools: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • ECAD tools: AutoCAD Electrical, Mentor Graphics, SPICE
  • Capable of working hands-on with flight hardware, test setups, and precision instruments
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs
  • Availability for occasional extended shifts
  • Night shift/weekend shift availability

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using electrical test equipment – oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power & signal analyzers
  • Proficiency in scripting and analysis tools (e.g., C++, Python, MATLAB)
  • Understanding of harness design principles, cable routing, shielding, and EMI/EMC considerations.
  • Experience with space-qualified mechanisms (e.g., release devices, actuators, hinges, latches, deployment systems)
  • Familiarity with root cause and corrective action (RCCA) methodologies and nonconformance resolution

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute test plans to verify functionality, reliability, and performance of electromechanical mechanisms
  • Fabricate and integrate electrical wire harness, mechanical test fixtures, sensors and actuators and automated data acquisition systems
  • Integrate mechanisms into complex electrical systems, conduct thorough testing and validation of procedures, analyze test data, and troubleshoot issues
  • Develop comprehensive software automation to streamline hardware test flows
  • Perform flight operations, develop automated operations processes, and review and test flight operations procedures
  • Participate in iterative mechanism design improvements based on findings in test and flight operations
  • Prepare technical documentation, including interface control documents, system schematics, block diagrams, harness drawings, and installation procedures.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (power, RF, command and data handling, and other subsystems) to ensure seamless integration of electromechanical mechanisms
  • Troubleshoot and investigate anomalies and failures, perform root-cause analysis, and drive resolution
