About The Position

The Mechanical Technician performs routine work and repairs for a variety of mechanical equipment and systems supporting the academic, research, and clinical environments of Midwestern University. This position reports to the Lead Stationary Engineer. The role assists the mechanical engineering team with a variety of work activities to optimize the performance of mechanical products, machinery, and equipment. The hours for this position are Monday through Friday, from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED with 1-2 years of related experience with mechanical equipment or an Associates degree in a related field is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Intermediate skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. The ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
  • Intermediate skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • This individual must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner with regular, predictable, in person attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • A certification from a technical school or Associates degree in a related field is desired.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office, Word, and Excel is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor and major repairs of all buildings and equipment. (Major repairs are performed under the supervision of a licensed engineer.)
  • Completes daily, weekly and monthly checklists on building equipment maintenance procedures and maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures.
  • Updates service and repair records in the Campus Facilities Management System.
  • Assists the mechanical engineer and other personnel with maintenance tasks. Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass and lead, and nonmetals such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic.
  • Performs diagnostic tests on mechanical systems. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
  • Participate in developing and implementing mechanical maintenance plans to prevent costly equipment breakdowns.
  • Troubleshooting mechanical malfunctions and breakdowns, as well as performing repairs.
  • Documents process workflows and maintains mechanical service records.
  • Monitor the availability of parts and replenishes supplies.
  • Optimizes mechanical efficiency by adjusting machinery and equipment settings.
  • Maintains a tidy work environment and adhering to industry regulations.
  • Monitors building temperatures and adjusts as necessary.
  • Responds to emergency maintenance requests as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
