The Mechanical Materials Engineer 3 will research, plan, and design mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, directing and coordinating activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of these products and systems. The role requires applying knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as engines, instruments, controls, robots, and machines. The engineer will work on complex issues requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors and will exercise judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining results.

  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Designs products or systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
  • May plan and direct other engineers in fabrication of equipment and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
  • Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment.
  • Designs products and systems to interface machines, hardware, and software.
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Performs engineering design including analysis with materials to be used in advanced nuclear reactors.
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university in a related field.
  • 5+ years of directly related experience and/or training.
  • Ability to coordinate and work with a small team to design and analyze complex subsystems and subassemblies.
  • Ability to perform calculations to support design and analysis of multiple system elements.
  • Ability to create and review detailed design reports for both customer and regulator consumption.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Knowledgeable in using software conducive to presenting analytical results, such as Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • Education, background, &/or experience in the material sciences.
  • Basic Knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
  • Relevant experience in the nuclear industry and ASME BPVC.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/6 Sigma/Kaizen.
