The Mechanical Maintenance Operator performs industrial mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, fabrication, and equipment modifications from the electric arc furnace through the caster. This role helps ensure the safe and reliable operation of mechanical systems in a high-demand heavy industrial steelmaking environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years industrial mechanical maintenance experience (steel or heavy manufacturing preferred.)
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Ability to read mechanical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Committed to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in industrial maintenance or related field.
  • Mobile equipment certification.
  • Proficiency in TIG welding

Responsibilities

  • Follow all maintenance JSA’s, lockout/tagout procedures, and SSAB safety policies.
  • Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on:
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems (pumps, cylinders, valves, manifolds.)
  • Gearboxes, bearings, couplings, and drives.
  • Cooling water systems and utility piping.
  • Conveyor systems
  • Weld, repair, and fabricate components (stick, MIG, oxy-fuel cutting.)
  • Install and modify equipment per engineering drawings and mill standards.
  • Perform structural repairs to platforms, guarding, and steel structures, including elevated work.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical schematics, and P&IDs.
  • Operate mobile equipment, including forklifts, man lifts, and overhead cranes.
  • Log completed work and equipment data into CMMS.
  • Work safely in extreme heat, at heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Complete training within the designated timeframes and attend all required meetings.
  • Understand and support the company’s goals and values and adhere to company, department, safety, quality, environmental, and ethics policies and procedures.
