About The Position

The Dimensional Inspector / Metrology Technician plays a critical role in ensuring that manufactured components meet the required specifications through accurate dimensional inspection and documentation. This salaried non-exempt position involves a combination of hands-on metrology work and reporting responsibilities, supporting engineering and quality teams in both new product development and production environments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical training in metrology, mechanical inspection, or related field preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing-based mechanical inspection or metrology role.
  • Proficient with standard inspection tools and vision systems.
  • Familiarity with PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, or equivalent dimensional analysis software.
  • Strong working knowledge of engineering drawings and GD&T fundamentals.
  • Competency with Microsoft Excel and digital inspection reporting tools.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a dynamic production environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and operate manual and automated inspection tools.
  • Use of overhead cranes, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment required.
  • Work is performed in a clean, temperature-controlled metrology lab and on the production floor.
  • Requires use of appropriate PPE and adherence to all safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect cast, machined, molded, stamped, and forged parts made from metal, plastic, rubber, and polymer materials.
  • Use precision mechanical measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height stands, surface plates) to verify dimensional conformance.
  • Interpret ASME and ISO-compliant engineering drawings; apply fundamental GD&T concepts in routine inspections.
  • Operate 2D and 3D vision systems to collect and evaluate measurement data.
  • Use dimensional analysis software such as PolyWorks (or equivalent) for point-cloud evaluation.
  • Operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using PC-DMIS software; follow established programs and setups based on part numbers.
  • Assist with basic CMM program edits and adjustments as needed.
  • Compile inspection results in Excel and other digital formats; ensure accuracy and clarity in reports.
  • Support calibration and maintenance of measurement tools and equipment; maintain documentation records.
  • Utilize 2D CAD (.dxf) files and solid models in inspection systems where applicable.
  • Prioritize work using job tracking tools and communicating inspection status with internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to share inspection findings and support continuous improvement.
  • Safely disassemble/reassemble parts for inspection purposes and handle materials using overhead cranes, pallet jacks, and lifting devices.
  • Maintain organization of inspection work-in-process and clearly segregate scrap material.
  • Maintain proper organization of work-in-process (WIP) and scrap materials in designated storage areas.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to complete shared inspection projects and meet deadlines.
