About The Position

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest. You will be working as part of the Mechanical Handling team designing in the areas of material handling equipment, treatment and vitrification systems, and/or supporting utilities. You will assist the Mechanical Engineering Group Supervisor in managing discipline work process execution and assuring technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standard. You will lead design, development, modification, evaluation, and/or issues resolution of mechanical components and processes. Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project's mechanical aspects are met.

Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or related) engineering (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant professional experience or 9-12 years of relevant professional work experience.
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
  • Experience in front end mechanical design and equipment selection for nuclear waste processing, nuclear, or nuclear chemical facilities including cranes, and other material handling equipment.
  • Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including SolidWorks and MicroStation.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft office suite of products.
  • Familiar with regulations and industry codes and standards affecting complex engineering work within discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Leads a small group of engineers and technologists in executing project schedule activities.
  • Plans and conducts independent mechanical work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of mechanical engineering techniques, procedures and criteria on a medium size project or assignment in support of a global business unit.
  • Leads the design, development, modification and evaluation of mechanical components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Proficient in reviewing engineering documents, specifications, design standards and ensuring technical compliance.
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed.
  • Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule and support PEM/PE/EGS in creating schedules that align with project/program.
  • Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day-to-day work activities.
  • Support the PEM/PE/EGS on interfaces with DOE, DNFSB, WDOH, and Ecology.
  • Supports preparation of estimates, staffing needs and schedules.
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting.
  • Mentors mechanical engineering personnel by providing on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Develop and revise Mechanical Handling design and procurement documents.
  • Support the procurement of equipment by developing procurement packages, reviewing quotations and evaluating them technically, review of vendor submittals and resolution of technical issues during the procurement of mechanical equipment.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems.
  • Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.
