About The Position

Rapiscan, an OSI Systems Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Summer Intern, based out of Billerica, MA. We are proud to be a trusted provider of advanced X-ray technologies for ports, borders, military, high-threat facilities and critical infrastructure all over the world. Rapiscan is seeking an innovative and creative mechanical engineering intern who exhibits the passion to make a difference. During the period of internship, the successful candidate will work in support of new product development and/or existing product/process improvement activities. He/she will work under the direction of a peer mentor within the Mechanical Engineering group.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited program and actively working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Completed course work on relevant subjects such as Machine Design, Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics.
  • Self-motivated and inquisitive.
  • Able to work with limited supervision when provided clear direction.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D solid modeling CAD tools.
  • Exhibits a general knowledge of engineering principles, both theoretical and practical.
  • Strong communication skills, including excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Good documentation and process discipline. Familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing practices.
  • Familiar with the following design disciplines: sheet metal, structural welded assemblies, machining, plastic injection molding, vacuum forming, and 3D printing.
  • Understanding of Bills-of-Materials and associated workflows (ECO’s).

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a multidiscipline project team, developing, maintaining and improving products.
  • Perform component selection, mechanical design, and sub-assembly model creation.
  • Create mechanical and electro-mechanical layout, sketches, and notes under direction of mentor.
  • Present design proposals to ME team. Justify design acceptance through formal analysis methods as needed (modeling tools and/or hand calculations).
  • Maintain good technical coordination and communication with the engineers and project teams.
  • Validate proof-of-concept designs by building and testing prototypes and mock-ups.
  • Rigorously adhere to company and quality procedures and requirements.
  • Has a working knowledge of general machine shop and drafting practices.
  • Possess experience using computer design tools, specifically SolidWorks 3D solid modeling CAD.
