Mechanical Engineering Intern - Summer 2026

Air Squared Manufacturing, LLCThornton, CO
10h$20 - $25

About The Position

Air Squared Manufacturing, Inc. is a leading designer and manufacturer of scroll type compressors and vacuum pumps for the medical, automotive, aerospace, fuel cell and power generation industries. Our company focuses on challenging, new applications which require unique solutions and outside of the box thinking. Working closely with our customers allows us to design a completely customized solution that fits their exact needs. Air Squared is aggressively pursuing the compressors used in auxiliary air systems on board fully electric trucks and buses. Newly developed liquid cooled scroll compressor technology has shown to offer a step change in pressure capability for oil free compressors. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern who is driven, perceptive, organized, has leadership abilities, works well with others, and has good attention to detail. This internship is ideal for a senior standing student pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Scroll compressors are unique in that their designs include a variety of Mechanical Engineering specialties to fully understand the working principles. These specialties include: Heat Transfer: Understanding of heat transfer principles is necessary to manage thermal effects during scroll device operation. This knowledge is crucial for optimizing compressor reliability and performance by designing for efficient heat dissipation. Thermodynamics: A solid understanding of thermodynamics is essential for analyzing the compression process within scroll devices. This knowledge will be applied to optimize compressor performance metrics like efficiency and discharge temperature. Mechanics of Materials: A strong understanding of material properties is essential for selecting appropriate materials for scroll devices we fabricate at Air Squared. This knowledge will be applied to ensure component strength, durability, and performance. Dynamics & Statistics: The ability to analyze scroll device operation using principles of dynamics and statics is crucial. This includes calculating bearing loads, shaft deflections, and performing static balancing of scroll compressors. Fluid Dynamics: Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software is required to analyze compressible flow in our scroll devices. You will use this skillset to optimize factors like cooling and pressure drop. The job will include assisting in the design and testing of new scroll compressors and vacuum pump designs. This includes detailing the design to be ready for manufacturing as well as producing necessary documentation for the machine shop.
