About the position

Mechanical Design Engineering Intern for metal cutting machine tool products. Under supervision, job responsibilities will encompass designing and analyzing computer-controlled machine tool products (mechanical, electrical, and software), interacting with other business functions, and working with assembly build teams on the shop floor. The intern will be exposed to the engineering design process which include understanding input requirements, analysis, design, bills of material, drafting practices and standards, drawing/model creation, design verification/validation, test, and shop follow-up. This will be achieved by being given assignments of increasing scope and responsibility throughout an internship at Fives Giddings & Lewis. The intern may participate in Continuous Improvement and Customer Satisfaction activities, root cause problem analysis, design review techniques, failure modes and effects analysis, and hazard analysis. The intern will also be exposed to functional areas outside of Engineering to gain an understanding of the machine tool business.

  • Creates functional, safe, reliable, economical, and serviceable designs.
  • Meets product plan goals and schedules.
  • Provides accurate design documentation according to Giddings & Lewis and industry engineering standards.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to improve designs for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Communicates effectively with suppliers and customers when needed.
  • Improves overall company and engineering efficiency and effectiveness by participation in special assignments and projects.
  • Becomes knowledgeable and proficient in the use of company and industry standards.
  • Becomes knowledgeable and proficient in the use of PLM (Agile) and ERP (SAP) systems.
  • ISO 9001 &14001 awareness and compliance.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university - Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering degree.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status (green card).
  • Minimum 1 year of college study in Mechanical Engineering, or related degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with machine shop practices is a plus.
  • Desire to be familiar with 2D CAD AutoCAD and adhere to engineering standards, guidelines, and practices.
