The Mechanical and Reliability Systems and Prototype Development Department is the mechanical hub of MITRE, focusing on mechanical design, analysis, and testing to aid sponsors in developing complex prototypes and researching next-generation manufacturing techniques. Interns will work with a mentor on mechanical engineering tasks, utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) software, computer-aided design (CAD), and testing equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student pursuing an accredited degree program in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related major.
  • Students should be continuing their education the semester following their internship.
  • Must continue to be enrolled full-time in the semester following the internship.
  • Demonstrated academic excellence.
  • Knowledge of mechanical or aerospace engineering theory.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience with CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent).
  • Experience with FEA (ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing, etc.).
  • Experience with mechanical testing equipment (Instron, shaker table, thermal chamber, etc.).
  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public and contributing to mission-driven work.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize finite element analysis (FEA) software to perform mechanical analysis (structural, vibration, thermal, computational fluid dynamics, etc.) to evaluate environmental requirements.
  • Leverage computer-aided design (CAD) and prototyping capabilities in the on-site Advanced Manufacturing Lab to aid in rapid design of prototype components.
  • Validate analysis results (vibration, thermal, material properties, etc.) using testing equipment in the on-site Environmental Test Lab.
