About The Position

We are searching for a self-motivated detail-oriented Mechanical Engineering Designer to join our Machine Shop at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

Requirements

  • Extensive background in programming, tooling and machining techniques to yield fixturing and products that meet customer requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to work through a difficult problem, using proper steps to define and formulate ideas to reach a solution
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Minimum requirements include an Associate's Degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for the Professional level

Nice To Haves

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with both internal and external customers to deliver highly complex parts to very close tolerances
  • Utilize NC programming to provide tool paths for CNC machining of complex fixtures, parts, and fabrications
  • Utilize CMM programming to provide inspection analysis for machined parts
  • Conceptualize, design, and implement fixturing concepts to yield very close tolerance parts as defined by customers and sponsors
  • Work with supervisor, project sponsors, and shop personnel to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Make recommendations on manufacturing processes and techniques to meet such goals
  • Give project updates and status reports to meet customer requirements
  • Make recommendations on material selection, geometric tolerances, and dimensioning schemes
  • Interface directly with customers and sponsors on technical issues
  • Provide work status updates to senior personnel
  • Perform basic department tasks related to classified and unclassified documentation control, copying, filing, and database entry
  • Respond to requests for information from the manufacturing and assembly teams
  • Work closely with very skilled machinists, often providing leadership and direction during projects
