About The Position

The mechanical engineer reports to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for the design and substantiation of payload mounts and modification to aircraft primary and secondary structure in accordance with FAA and mission requirements. The mechanical engineer will also work with the electrical engineering team on aircraft modification design and integrations. The mechanical engineer ensures via free-body diagrams and calculations for static loading conditions that designs are substantiated and integrated properly. The mechanical engineer interfaces firstly with FAA DER and ODA representatives as required. Project management, via DST provided tools, is expected to be maintained and updated for management and other departments are informed on project progress. Customer interaction and collaboration is expected of the mechanical engineer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Four (4) to six (6) years’ of experience as a mechanical or aeronautical engineer.
  • Experience in aviation or defense related industry with FAA procedural and requirement experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of 3D design software, PCs, operating systems and office software.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required to obtain/maintain a United States Security Clearance.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to obtain a passport.
  • Must pass a DOT/FAA regulated drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years' of experience as a mechanical or aeronautical engineer.
  • Extensive knowledge of SolidWorks design software.
  • Experience within the ISR aviation industry.
  • Experience with FAA Safety and Certification.
  • Prior training experience on aircraft mechanical systems.
  • DOD Secret Level Clearance (at minimum).

Responsibilities

  • Prompt and regular attendance on-site at DST facilities.
  • Performs 3D modeling, utilizing SolidWorks software, of existing aircraft components in order to accurately represent surrounding structure of new designs.
  • Creates 3D models of all new components, parts, assemblies, and installations.
  • Creates 2D drawings, utilizing SolidWorks software, of all parts, assemblies, and installations in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Researches hardware and components to best suit mechanical or structural needs.
  • Works directly with approved vendors to determine hardware or component suitability.
  • Troubleshoots at the physical level, working with electronic and mechanical measurement hardware, as well as physical checking and testing of hardware devices.
  • Coordinates with approved fabrication vendors and systems component OEMs.
  • Responsible for sending RFQ notices to vendors, supplying technical drawings and data as required.
  • Interfaces with and is a POC for internal fabrication, assembly, and installation personnel.
  • Provides technical consultation, training and support as designated by manager.
