HII – Mission Technologies is seeking a experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team in support of the U.S. Navy Surface Training Program (STP). In this role, you will be responsible for the design, development, and production of Shore-Based Training, Engineering & Development Support (SBEDS) Part Task Trainer (PTT) systems. As part of HIIs mission to deliver innovative solutions for national defense, you will play a critical role in ensuring that naval training systems meet stringent engineering standards. Your contributions will directly support the operational readiness of key Navy platforms and systems, helping maintain mission effectiveness across the fleet. This role requires on site work in Huntsville, AL and cannot be done remotely. Requirements

  • 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.
  • Autodesk Inventor experience to create sheet metal parts, 3D printed Part Models, models from data sheets, and modules from actual parts/equipment.
  • Creation of presentations for exploded view used in the assembly drawings of modules and racks. Creation of metal drawings for fabrication to include flat patterns, detailed views, and callouts as required.
  • Previous CAD experience.
  • Experience providing project and user support that is inclusive of cable fabrication, hardware installation and relocation, hardware preventative and corrective maintenance, hardware fault isolation, and hardware repair - including documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Understand various types of hardware and fasteners, know how to distinguish between, various fasteners, bolt, machine screws, and Allen head screws, flat and lock washers, regular nuts and Ny-Lock nuts, etc. When to use each for various applications. Have a knowledge/understanding of PEM Products for insertion into sheet metal for mounting and fastening of various items to the metalwork.
  • Recognize when updates are required for drawings. To include adding corrections for errors, ways to improve the product, and change/add to the build steps to make assembly easier.
  • Find and understand data sheets for various items, how to interpret them, and know their limitations, use to create cutouts, brackets, and other types of metal work, along with 3D models for use in the subassemblies and assemblies and/or 3D Printing.
  • Familiar with Functional Configuration Audits and Physical Configuration Audits (FCAs/PCAs) of designated platforms to verify that software and/or hardware installed is authorized and complete.
  • Previous Model Based Engineering Experience (MBSE)

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze mechanical systems to support the design and functionality of Part Task Trainer components.
  • Provide hardware systems engineering support of training system evolution and integration, including the design, integration, implementation, and maintenance of training, engineering, and developmental test equipment suites.
  • Design and develop mechanical assemblies, tools, and devices integral to PTT systems using industry best practices.
  • Manufacture and test mechanical components to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and Navy training requirements.
  • Work on power-producing and power-using systems relevant to PTT environments, including motors, actuators, and thermal management systems.
  • Develop and integrate mechanical solutions for material handling, structural support, and motion systems within trainer platforms.
  • Create specialized tools and fixtures to assist in assembly, testing, and maintenance of PTT systems.
  • Perform design validation and optimization through computational analysis and simulation to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to translate training requirements into mechanical solutions for Navy systems.
