In this role, you will research, plan, design, and develop mechanical products and systems in areas including (but not limited to) mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, and heat transfer applications. You will apply research to the design, development, and testing of mechanical and electromechanical systems, evaluating their cost-effectiveness and efficiency. You will also recommend design modifications to eliminate malfunctions based on field performance. This role involves the application of scientific principles to design and implement technologies, components, and systems that comply with specifications, requirements, and customer guarantees. You will also ensure that novel ideas and innovations are captured and protected using applicable IP processes. This position reports to the Suppression Engineering Manager and involves collaboration with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Operations, Finance, Sales, and Marketing.

  • Lead the design, testing, and qualification of suppression products for various applications.
  • Translate product requirements into robust mechanical designs.
  • Estimate task effort and duration, ensuring designs meet cost and schedule targets.
  • Initiate and manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for new products, changes, and configurations.
  • Provide technical support to the sales team and assist with technical literature as needed.
  • Ensure product compliance with cost targets and relevant safety/agency standards (UL, CSA, CE, FM, etc.).
  • Support manufacturing and suppliers in resolving production challenges.
  • Assist with OEM application issues related to both new and existing products.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers to prepare product samples, including component selection and configuration.
  • Test and qualify new materials and components for cost reduction, supplier changes, and obsolescence mitigation.
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 0–3+ years of experience in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Strong decision-making, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • High degree of independent judgment; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with heat transfer and hydraulic flow in piping systems.
  • Knowledge of data-driven design methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, FMEA, root cause analysis).
  • Experience with test instruments and computer-based data acquisition.
  • Proficiency with model-based design tools (e.g., CFD, FEA).
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and production documentation.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and design for assembly/cost/manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or equivalent).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience designing pressurized equipment, valves, and seals.
