About The Position

Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Mechanical Engineer in Chattanooga, TN. This challenging position will provide engineering support in the field of installation and commissioning of the culvert valves – heavy mechanical installations - related to construction of the lock chamber at the Chickamauga Dam Project; a new 110-foot by 600-foot lock located downstream of Chickamauga Dam.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field + 2 years of relevant experience (heavy mechanical, heavy industrial, etc.) or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Understanding of heavy civil construction methods, means, and materials.
• Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and technical documents.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards.
• Effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in outdoor and high-paced field environments.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical and commercial inputs regarding management of subcontracts and prime contract.
• Coordination of work processes, interface with other departments, external contractors, and resources such as project team members
• Provide technical support to field crews, ensuring accurate interpretation of drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.
• Oversee layout, surveying, and grade control to maintain project accuracy.
• Help manage and implement construction methodologies and best practices in collaboration with the superintendent and project team.
• Conduct field inspections to ensure work meets Shimmick’s quality standards and project specifications.
• Work with the Quality Control team to document and resolve non-conformances.
• Assist in safety audits and enforce compliance with OSHA and Shimmick safety policies.
• Promote a safety-first culture by proactively identifying and mitigating potential hazards.
• Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining project schedules.
• Track material quantities, labor hours, and equipment utilization to support cost control efforts.
• Identify and help resolve potential project delays or budget overruns.
• Work closely with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and design teams to facilitate smooth execution.
• Prepare and track RFIs (Requests for Information), submittals, daily reports, and as-built documentation.
• Participate in daily and weekly construction meetings to discuss project progress and challenges.
• Serve as a liaison between the field and office, ensuring seamless communication and issue resolution.
• Utilize construction management software such as Bluebeam for tracking project data.
• Maintain organized field records and documentation for closeout and future reference.
