About The Position

AECOM is seeking an Entry-Level Mechanical Engineer to be based in our Arlington, VA office. This position is expected to begin on June 2026. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for performing specific portions of a broader assignment under the mentoring of an experienced engineer, gathering and correlating basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures, preparing designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings and construction drawings, evaluating and applying standard engineering techniques to design HVAC systems in buildings using building information modeling, proposing approaches to solve new problems, performing work in accordance with the agreed-upon budget and schedule with little supervision, and independently completing primary design elements for engineering works. The role also includes performing comparative analysis of system configurations and evaluating building performance metrics through advanced energy simulation and modeling software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field.
  • Due to the nature of work, U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.

Nice To Haves

  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (EIT / FE)
  • Experience utilizing industry standard software packages such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam (pdf editor), or similar.
  • Full understanding and ability to complete accurate and coordinated project design assignments with the ability to review team member's work for quality.
  • Experience sizing ductwork systems and modeling in 2D and 3D platforms.
  • Experience sizing hot water, condenser water, and chilled water piping systems and modeling in 2D and 3D platforms.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE Standard 62.1 - Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 - Energy Standard for Buildings.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Comfortable working in a high energy environment with frequent deadlines.
  • Successfully performed the role of a design engineer on various projects.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, selects, applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and judgement based on experience to design HVAC systems in buildings using building information modeling.
  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered using modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.
  • Performs work in accordance with the agreed-upon budget and schedule with little supervision.
  • Independently performs all the tasks necessary to complete the primary design elements for engineering works.
  • Performs comparative analysis of system configurations and evaluates building performance metrics through advanced energy simulation and modeling software.
